Engawa

by Tamiko Onozawa

When I received the photos of Hydra, those magnificent landscapes inspired me. This installation is a playful object/equipment for people strolling by on the coastal path for stopping by, resting and enjoying the beautiful views.

Engawa uses reclaimed timber planks to provide a rocking recliner seat for passengers. Constructed mainly by simple sliding "Siguchi-Tsugite".

The original proposal was Selene : a sheltered seat, shaped to allow a natural rocking motion when seated, and to provide shade from the strong sun. Made from recycled board such as paper honeycomb, cut out in shape which allows the efficient use of board for main elements and sub-elements. Each panel element is painted in white on one side and in black on another, this creates a visual differentiation in how appears when approaching the object and when leaving it. Providing small solar lamps in-between panels to light in the evening.
