Glow

The Aegean fascinates me. When there, I love to find a quiet place by the sea to sit down and watch.  I enjoy looking at the profile of the neighbouring islands, the water and the rocks but it is the light that I find most striking. It is a key element of this wonderful ‘show’.  Indeed when light goes at sunset, part of the show comes to an end.

This installation plays with light to extend the ‘show’ for a few more hours. It is a smooth surface on a quiet place by the sea to watch and be. It captures the light during the day and releases it after sunset, shifting at night the show to itself. It is visible from the sea and from the path. Visitors are spectators during day and players at night when the place glows.

The installation is a platform that can be used around the clock. For sunbathing, sitting, watching the sunset or playing. It is made with materials that have been found around in Hydra such as pallets and plastic water bottles and others more technological such as solar cells, rechargeable batteries and electroluminescent wire. It is sealed with boat-making techniques to achieve a smooth finish and avoid overheating. The platform lights up automatically when the sun goes down and it glows until the batteries are empty. The layer of crushed plastic bottles above the light source helps distributing the light evenly along the surface.
